We went to Provo for Easter. Great trip only it snowed real hard. The wind blew 100 miles an hour in SLC and Ogden. I went to the Dr.he told me I needed my hemmoroids taken out.
I gave a lesson to Quorum instructors in a Priesthood Leadership Meeting. I asked my home teacher Art Schaeffermayer and Matt Foley to give me a blessing. Brother Foley was mouth. He promised that my problems with hemmoroids would be corrected and I would resume my activities in a normal way. He gave me a special blessing conderning my work at Ver Jr. High School. It was an inspired blessing. I am very thankful for the Priesthood...
Great day Ryan turned 9 years old. It was Mothers day and Jamie was ordained a teacher by me. Bishop Reynolds and Brother Christiansen assisted.
It was the annual Elks Teen of the year award banquet. Dick Nourse of Channel 5 news fame was guest speaker. Darolyne and I shook his hand after the banquet.
Since last writing I have had one hemmoroid taken out I go for my next treat treatment of 5 next week.
I was appointed assistant regional director for the UASSP for next year. I lost to a Mr. Bybee by 3 votes of getting the Middle School Representative for UASSP. Scott Bowles and I went to SLC to do an accreditation of Kearns Jr. High School.
I took 40 of our faculty to Springville 2 weeks ago to the Middle School.
June 1983. A lot of things have happened. I am worse. Dr. Wilken found a fissure in rectal region and has slated me for a barium enema test of my colon. T say the least I am scared. Then I was released from the High Council, after 11 years on the High Council. They make a new stake, we are now in the Vernal Glines Stake. Stake President is Gayle McKeachnie. School ended and it was a good year. Scott Bowles left as my Vice Principal. I spent 3 days in Heber at a workshop. I was appointed to the State Commission on Excellence. I am representing the Principals from the State of Utah. The chair on this committee is Ted Capener
KC cut his toe and took 10 stitches. The next day he came down with a 104 fever. Robert Vincent and I gave him a blessing. He was up and at it the very next day.
Carl Childs was married her in Vernal and we went to his marriage.
Flooding in Utah. Here in Vernal homes on the Ashley Creek are being sandbagged. It is the end of June and the corn is only up 6 inches The last days are truly upon us.

I am now 38 years old.
The last few years have been pretty tough on me. The Jr High is a tough job let alone to have to go to double sessions. I think I have accomplished a lot though here at the school. The Lord has truly blessed me.
Christmas was very good my wife is a very charitable woman. She gives annonamously. In my job Mr. Nelson has gone to the High School. Mr. Gurneyh joined our staff as a vice principal.
My mot her has been sick again. In the hospital for a bleeding ulcer. She is a great mother giving her all for her children and grandchildren. Even though it is a meager little of money.

I have Ted Wilson posters in my front yard, I do like President Reagan though.I did a campaign spot on the local radio for Byron Merrell for county commissioner.
November. Opening day of the Pheasant hunt. We went out Mayberrys. Chance Mayberry shot two Pheasants. I got 3 shots off but no birds.

LeRoy Passes Away
August 1982 and beyond.
We went to Canada for LeRoys Funeral We traveled to Helena where we stayed at Motel 6. Then on to Great Falls where we went to some antique stores/. Then to Lethbridge. At the Funeral I gave the benediction and out at the Magrath Cemetery I dedicated the grave for LeRoy Dudley. In Canada I golfed in Magrath and at Crows nest Pass. I metal detected and found a lot of Canadian coins. I obtained quite a lot of antiques including a copper boiler and a round top trunk.The Lord blessed us on the trip, our truck is 10 years old and has 90000 miles on the engine. On the way home we stopped at Lagoon for the kids and went to Orem for a few days before heading back to Vernal. I am very grateful for my family especially my wife I am so fortunate to have her for my wife.
We had a High Council retreat at President Sowards cabin in the Uintas. I was asked to give a one hour talk.. The night before I went to Dripping Springs and spoke to a youth group from Ogden. The talk was around a campfire. Then a day later I spoke at Vernal 8th ward conference...been a busy weekend.
Last week I had the chance to go to Provo and Salt Lake. KC is feeling better. His bowels are moving again.
August 28th. Last week I spoke on Charity at Vernal 8th Ward. Then gave an honor to andy Merrell as he got his Eagle. School starts Monday.The corn and tomatos are on. the Lord has truly blessed us.
We bought a 1978 Audi 5000.. I hope we like it.
Double Sessions is on and going. 8th and 9th grades in the morning and 6th and7th grades in the afternoon. I am the Principal for both. Jim McCoy is Assistant Principal for the Middle School and Scot Bowles is the Assistant Principal for the Junior High School.
The Boyacks came down to stay, Joyces' arthritis flared up so they went home early. Yesterday I got another load of wood from the Uintas that is 2 loads this year.
This week Bishop Morrill was crushed to death, he was the bishop of the Jensen Ward. I attended the funeral, Stan Allen gave the talk.
September. First freeze. Tony Woodhouse. Sister Sargeants second husband died in an auto accident .
We now have 1600 students with 59 teachers in double sessions. School is going better than ever.
We sold our 1979 Cutlass Supreme to the John Bushs' for $4700.

June 1982
Last night Bishop Reynolds and I went to the Eddingtons and gave their daughter a blessing.
Our house was egged two nights in a row. The blessings of being a Jr. High Principal in Vernal, Utah.
Went fishing on the opener went to Red Fleet and steinaker,, Got 4 trout.
Brother Charles Beede and myself went down to the Stake Farm and helped irrigate.
Jamie was set apart as the Deacons President Great Honor.
Ryan played t ball for the Yankees he played pitcher.Joey played in the mustang league for the Pirates he played first base. Jamie played Pony league for the Braves he also played first base.
Our house and car was egged twice
I spoke in the Naples first ward. I spoke about the Book of Mormon. We are getting ready to go to Snowmass, Colorado for a week to and ECA conference. Last week we met as School Administrators in the District.
We spent 4 days in Snowmass out side of Aspen, Colorado. Great Conference. We went to a broadway play, The Voice of a Turtle. Went to Aspen shopping. Went Golfing at the Snowmass Country Club. We went up to the Maroon Lake. This is gorgeous country. Before we left our neighbors the Rassmussens were robbed of $1000. They caught whoever was doing it.
I forgot to mention KC took his first steps in Snowmass, Colorado, he is a real cutie.
I have been going to Yard sales. I got two fly fishing outfits for $20 2 sleeping bags $20 two letterman jackets for $ 2
Darolyne and I went to a community concert, Classical Guitarists the Jensen Woodbury Duo. They were really good. We are getting ready to go to Canada. I just read the book Self Renewal by JohnGardner. I well speak at the Young Adults Fireside tomorrow night.

Bonnie Behunin an Aet Teacher at VJH is really sick with Diabetes and may have to quit.
Stake Conference, Steve Romney gave a talk. He praised me in behalf of bringing him back to the Church. The compliment is due to the Lord for which I am grateful.

Today I start teaching Elementary Education 301 as an adjunct for Utah State University.
My 37th birthday. Joey gave me 2$ and an a card. Ryan gave me a card. Jamie forgot Darolyne gave me 2 shirts and a pair of slacks. My mother called it was a good day.
My Uncle Von Lee Childs Sr. died in Gunnison. He was my Dads half brother.
Today a wired a house in Maesar for Kevin Eddington. It was a $90,00 house. It was fun to do that again. I was an electrician in Seattle when I was 21 years old.
Last week I went to St. George to Secondary Principal Meetings. I wen with Jan Nelson and Bill Caldwell.
I spoke at General Priesthood Meeting I felt it was a good speech on Priesthood.I was blessed to deliver my speech.
The School Board is considering Split Sessions for Vernal Jr. High.
March 1982. I got the Type B Asian flu. 14 days of feeling rotten.
We went to Orem and did sealings in the Provo Temple. While in Orem, we went to Mark Marshalls missionary farewell. He is going to South Carolina.
We are remodeling our home by building a living room out of or carport.
A custodian at school is threatening me to get a lawyer because he says I am harassing him. I used our attorney of Uintah School District. Later I had to let the custodian go.
The School Board voted to go to split sessions at the Jr. High School for next year.
General Conference. Missionary service was cut from 24 months to 18 months. I have been figuring out the schedules for next year, we will have 1500 students and 59 teachers, 10 cooks 5 custodians 3 aids 3 secretaries 2 vice principals and myself 83 of us.
Ryan turned 8 years old today. He had his birthday party at the Roller Skating Rink.
He was baptized at the Vernal Utah Stake Center by Hal Marshall his cousin. I and my brother were witnesses.
Sunday I confirmed him and blessed him Those in the circle were: John Robbins, Bishop Reynolds, Eldon Buckalew, Bob Vincent and Art Schaefermayer. Darolyne bore her testimony on Sunday at Sacrament Meeting. She has a great testimony.

Fall of 1981
We always gather wood in the fall. We go up the mountain to East Park and cut and load pine. Then we bring in down the mountain and cut it and stack it for use in our wood burning stove in the winter, in which we use to supplement our gas bill.
I have had strep throat, which it seems that I get once a year, this one turned into a viral infection in my sinuses.
I went out to Ogden to talk to the local PDK and IRA my mother went up with us, she told us a lot of stories about her anscestors which I have remembered some.
It was Joey's 10th birthday, he is a very energetic and a good boy, very obedient.
Went to Priesthood session of General Conference with Jamie for the first time.
This year my salary is $32,500m U an also teaching college course for USU. I will make $840 to do that. I am teaching a level 2 class for $1200 and working on a curriculum committee for $350, which totals $35,050
Even making this much money it seems like we never have enough money. We are a very blessed family and would have very little if we didn't pay our tithing.
I had the opportunity to be on the Feedback Program at KVEL radio.
I went fishing up Brush Creek.
Someone hit the Junior High with 21 eggs. Vernal is a tough town because of the Oil Well workers who come and go. I must say that the Discipline plan I put into effect at the Junior High has been a success. It has changed the behavior of the students big time..Takes a lot of time and effort though..
Darolynes parents came down again but it has been very rainy.
Patty my niece is having marital problems, her husband is an alcoholic.

KC is blessed
September 6, 1981 is the day that i gave a name and a blessing to Kameron Sean Childs. Those standing in the circle were Mike Sullivan, President Irv Haws,our stake president, Steve Romney, Bob Vincent, Eldon Buckalew, bill Murphy John Robbins..In my blessing I claimed he was a Saturday Warrior born to usher in the Second Coming of Christ. I blessed him with great knowledge and wisdom. He would be a leader. I blessed him with sensitivity for the feelings of others. all of this if he is obedient.
Interesting event.. Jamie and Steve Romney and I went metal detecting behind Ed Hackings fathers house in the mouth of dry fork canyon. We went up on the hillside and found 45 or so bullets fored by the soldiers who stayed at Fort Thornburgh over 100 years ago.

Darolyne had very hard contractions so we went to the Hospital. She had a paracervical at 11:30. The baby came really fast so fast that Darolyne had him in the labor room of the new Medical Center at Ashley Valley, She never made it to the delivery room. i viewed the whole event.It was a very sacred moment.One which brought tears. We were not suppose to have any more children. We are very appreciative to our Father in Heaven.

Joey is playing pitcher position.

I ordained Jamie as a Deacon in the Aaronic priesthood.
Stake Conference, G Homer Durham was our visiting authority. Created Davis 3rd Ward, 3 new Bishops were called, Neldon Slaugh, Lyn Nelson and Loran Merrell. High Council was cut from17 members down to 14 members, I am still 3rd seat and going on my 9th year. I have been asked to speak at the Uintah High School Seminary Graduation.
Darolyne bore her testimony in fast and testimony meeting.
Other events

Today I went to Provo to visit dixon Jr. High and the new Mountain View High School. I went with Bill Caldwell and Jan Nelson. We had a good trip.
Darolyne is 5 months pregnant, sure seems funny to be going through this again, Ryan is 7 years old. I bought Jamie a Wilson Mitt for his birthday. Joey and Ryan are on Soccer teams, Joey and Jamie are on baseball teams. I am the coach of the Pirates again and Joey is on my team. We have lost two more teachers at school, Randy Biggs and Cloyd Harrison. Smiths Food King a new store opened in Vernal, and MacDonalds Hamburgers is being built. I am presently debating to apply for Superintendent.

Adventures at Vernal Junior
January 26, 1981
The day started when some one threw a coke bottle through Mr. Nelsons window. Then found out that my secretary had obscene phone calls all week. Then to top it all we had a bomb threat at the school. We evacuated the school. Called the police, 8 of them showed up. They went through the building, it took 45 minutes for them to search the building. We moved the students to the gym and had a make shift dance. The police were still nervous and it was 12:15, we couldn't serve lunch so I ordered busses and we sent the kids home without going back to their lockers to retrieve their belongings. The Superintendent got mad at me for doing this. But for safety sake I feel I was right.
Interesting news in the Church News Eldredge Cleaver is taking missionary lessons. Eldredge was the leader of the Black Panthers in the 1960s

Today Corey Grua an excellent English Teacher quit. He is going to Ohio to work for and Oil Shale Company..He asked me if I would like his Vintage Post Office Box. I gleefully said yes.

After 444 days the 52 hostages were released from Iran. We tied 52 yellow ribbons outside Vernal Junior High.

Happy New Year 1981
The hottest winter ever for Vernal no snow no rain a real drought.
The boys are really helping out around the house because Darolyne bent sick because of being pregnant.
I am now teaching Elementary Education classes for USU. This as an Adjunct.
I played basketball for the Cardiac Kids and scored 24 points in game that ended in a tie 98 to 98.
Hostages are still being held in Iran.
Darolyne still has morning sickness, It is January 9, 1981
This is my 9th year in the Vernal Stke High Council. They are going to make a Davis 3rd Ward.
Jamie is playing in a YBA basketball team it is called the Cockroaches.
All 3 boys are doing good in school, I am proud of them.
January 14..Went to ALC with Randy Biggs to talk to the Elementary School Principals of Salt Lake City Schools. I spoke about Gifted and Talented students and programs. Their Superintendent Donald Thomas came to the meeting. I was asked to apply for a Principalship for next year. Then I went to Eastmont Middle School in Sandy. Salt Lake was smogged in for 43 straight days. It took $40 for gas to go to Salt Lake and back. Gasoline is about $1.17 a gallon.

Had a stress test for my heart and Dr. Stringham said I was a fit as a fiddle. Loving my Jr. High principalship.
I hired Bill Jones to take Bruce Bishops place. Bill is a policeman. He has a PE major and a sociology minor. He will be teaching history..Just a note Bill just did not do a good job as a teacher and at the end of the year we had to let him go. Then in 1985 I took a job as Principal of Dixon Middle School in Provo, Utah. In meeting my new staff I met Nancy Jones a special education teacher,her husband, the same Bill Jones I let go at Vernal Junior High. Then I found out that Bill was my Provo police officer assigned to my school..Awkward, but it worked out really well.
Darolyne is sick all the time because of her pregnacy. It is causing me alot of stress because I work all day then come home and have to do all the work.. The last week I played basketball for the Cardiac Kids and scored 28 points but I acquired a blood blister on my foot that turned into blood poisoning, it seems like Satan is really after me.
Our kids are excited about Christmas, Joey counted the presents under the tree and there are 39 presents.
Christmas came and went. It has been really warm for Vernal. and no moisture. Steinaker has not even frozen over. This is unheard of. For Christmas we got an Atari Game one of there first. and a Paint job for my truck. Jamie got a skateboard Joey a fishing pole and Ryan trucks.

Ronald Reagan won the Presidency by a landslide over Jimmy Carter. They now control the Senate for the firs time in many many years.

Dreams
I had a weird dream. I dreamed that 8 kids got in trouble and were off campus and I caught them, I could only remember 2 names Farrell Partin and Manuel Sisneros, The next day I told my vice principal about it. Sure enough Monday 3 students went off campus and Mr. Nelson caught them, one was Farrell Partin and the other was Manual Sisneros. I had another dream. I saw my Dad and asked him how his life on the other side of the veil was, he said great. He was dressed in white and looked like a man in his twenties. The Lord really lets us share in his dreams and visions.
The Lord is really blessing me in my new job.
I went to Springville Jr. and Orem Jr. to see Science programs with Mr. Oviat and MR. Colthorpe. It was a beautiful trip and really appreciate those men.

We bought a new car, a 1979 Oldsmobile cutlass Supreme, it had 17000 miles on it. We bought it for $5,500 and sold our Toyota Corolla Wagon 1974 for $1600.

I went to Springville Jr. and Orem Jr. to see Science programs with Mr. Oviat and MR. Colthorpe. It was a beautiful trip and really appreciate those men.

Gave a talk to the Student Body the first day at school. Reese Schultz a ninth grade student
was chewing tobacco in the assembly. He was turned in to the office. Our new policy was to give students and their parents options of disciple, one of which was a swat. His parents wanted us to swat him and get him back to class. It was the swat heard around the school.. Discipline became very good and the students and teachers started to believe in our new policy.
Jamie is in 6th grade and Mrs. Nelson is his teacher, Joey is in 3rd grade and Mrs. Horrocks is his teacher, Ryan is in 1st grade and Mrs. Emery is his teacher.
As a High Councilman to Davis 2nd ward I set apart Thomas Howells Jr. as 1st counselor in the elders quorum presidency.
Last week our school district bond failed. Governor Matheson called for a 2.5% cut in school funding. Times are getting tough. The jr. high job is getting better and I guess I am enjoying it.

Last thing I did with Naples Elementary was take a trip with the 6th grade to Masseys Ranch.
First meeting with concerned parents of Vernal Jr. High. The school has been undisciplined according to a large group of parents. First meeting I have been to beginning with prayer then alot of tension and squabbling and poison then ending in prayer.. Oh dear what am I to do.
Mount St. Helens blew its top again. Earthquake in Santaquin 4.8 on the Richter scale. Massive quake in California 6.0 on the Richter scale. I love my family and fear for the future.

I was worried about going to Vernal Jr. High so I met with my Bishop CalDee Reynolds, After the interview, Bishop Reynolds said something that shook me to the bones. He told me years ago.
he took music from my Dad at the old Junior High, it was then that I knew going to Vernal Jr. was a call and I needed to go.
July 7, 1980 Been busy with parent meetings, we have decided to close the campus.
Ted Taylor and myself took the little league team floating the Green River. I took Darolyne Jamie, Joey and Ryan. I hooked the largest fish I have ever had on but after awhile it snapped my line.
Our Little League team went 9 and 3 and Jamie made the All Star team. We are going to Canada in the blue Chevy truck.
President Irvin Haws gave me a blessing as I entered my new position at Vernal Jr. High. He counseled my to take care of my wife and my family and my church responsibilities and I will be successful.
We went to Canada and spent 2 weeks. Our Truck had 79000 miles on it..When we were at the cabin in Glacier Park is when a Grizzly Bear killed 2 people only a mile from our cabin. We were kind of afraid to say the least buy that night an Indian man stayed out where the bear through one of them in the trees. The bear came back to get the person when the Indian shot the Bear..We also attended the Dudley and Anderson family reunions.
Spoke in Church, taught the project temple class, came home and gave each one of my sons fathers' blessing to begin the school year..Jamie that he would learn and excel in all he does, Joey that his great leadership talent will be used, and Ryan that he would learn how to read and control his wants.
Darolyne has had terrific pains in the back of her head.

This going to slow.. I will now abridge my Vernal Journal
My faculty at Naples School held a surprise birthday party for me. 35th. they gave me a wax owl and a pencil set. I was touched. The owl because when I was the Principal of Naples we had a mascot contest in the community and they chose Wiseguys. Darolyne gave me a suit a sweater vest and a shirt. I ran 2 miles for the first time in my life. I got down to 196 lbs. My tingling seems to have ceased. Bob Vincent and myself gave Ryan a blessing, immediately he started getting better.

2, I found out I have Chemical diabetes or adult onset , I am on a diet and run 2 miles a day and do not eat anything with sugar in it.
3. Arthur Schaefermayer my home teacher and Mathew Foley came over and gave me a blessing of health, I was blessed to have good health if I live the commandments and follow Drs, orders. Blessed to have children and blessed to handle job stress.
4. I spoke to a group of 200 at he Salt Lake Hilton at the annual Reading Conference. Darolyne and I stayed there. First night we have been away from the kids since we started our family.
5.I finished teaching the sophomore block, 10 weeks for USU Extension.
6. My Kindergarten teacher Kaye Pearson, husband was killed in a car accident near Price. The highway patrolman and I had to break the news. One of the toughest assignments of my life
7.My mother found out her knees are worn out. She can't climb stairs anymore.
8. I have been to the temple twice since last writing.
9. I went to BYU and UofU spent two days interviewing prospective teachers.
10. BYU basketball finished 24 and 5 but lost out to Clemson in the NCAA tourney.
11. I have been appointed to Vernal Junior High as its new Principal.
On March 1980 I had a great interview with Jamie and taught him sex and the sacred nature of it. I really appreciated his attitude. He is almost 11 years old, so he had heard a lot of it from his friends.
April 6, 1980 Sesquientenial Birthday of the Church. Conference was broadcast from Fayette New York. We learned today that Darolynes grandmother Jean Dudley died today in Magrath, Alberta she was 84 years old.
Down to 187 pounds.
Darolynes mother flew down to Vernal. Her flight from SLC to Vernal was quite something. Then her dad drove down and they stayed with us. Then I had to speak to a group of parents in Montpelier, Idaho. Her parents followed us up there and we stayed at the Crest Motel. On the local radio they were announcing that Dr. John Childs from Utah would be speaking that night, quite funny. about 200 people showed up. incumple, we did sealing for 50 couples.
The prophet announced the building 7 new temples.
National news, hostages are held in Iran, annual inflation rate of 18% interest rates are around 20% people are not buying much.
Big Energy Fair at Naples Elementary. Big Success. Senator Orrin Hatch called us and congratulated us, and Gov. Matheson sent a telegram congratulating us on our venture.

This has been a spiritual month, I taught the gospel to Kaye Pearson. Kaye is a nonmember and whose husband was killed in an auto accident. This was the first time in my life I ever really did any missionary work. Patty Marshall my niece was with me and bore witness also.
Little League is starting and I am assisting Ted Taylor in coaching the Cardinals. Jamie is on the team. Joey is playing soccer and doing quite well.
We lost our favorite Dog Annie. I think our neighbor boy shot her with his 22.
We had Stake Conference. Ronald Poelman was our visiting Authority.he is a member of the Seventy.
america tried to rescue the 53 hostages in Iran but it failed. America was taken as the laughing stock of all nations.
Father and sons outing at Flaming Gorge and it snowed. Fred Spencer a third grade teacher at Naples threw a rock and hit one of his students when the student wouldn''t come down from the tricky bars. We suspended him without pay. He went out in the oilfield and earned more money than teaching. Americas economy is still rocking. we have a 6 year old car and a 7 year old truck and can't afford to finance anything. Now I am starting to worry about taking over the Junior High here in Vernal.
